Portfolio Director, Ambition North Wales

Alwen Williams

Alwen took up her current role with Uchelgais Gogledd Cymru | Ambition North Wales in January 2020 and with her team, she is tasked with leading the North Wales Growth Deal and delivering the Growth Vision for the Region.

The Growth Deal’s five programmes will bring £1 billion of investment to North Wales over the next fifteen years. It will create a vibrant, sustainable, resilient and thriving economy through addressing known long-term challenges and unlocking opportunities to build on our strengths, boost productivity and create new high-value jobs.

Prior to this, Alwen had a 24 year career with BTplc and infrastructure provider Openreach Ltd in a range of different strategic and operational leadership roles. In her career within the private sector Alwen developed expertise in strategic communication, working in the areas of marketing, internal communications, change management, public relations, public affairs, employee engagement and human resources. She also gained operational leadership experience in service delivery with responsibility of leading a large, field based team of engineers.

For most of her career Alwen worked in roles outside of Wales but the ‘hiraeth’ to come home took hold and she got the opportunity to take on her current role back at home in North Wales.

Alwen has received an Honorary Fellowship from the University of Wales Trinity St David’s and Glyndwr University in recognition of her contribution to business. She has a first-class honours degree in Leadership and Management from the Open University, a certificate in Executive Coaching with Ashridge Hult Business School and is currently studying for a Masters in Systems Thinking with the Open University.

Alwen lives in Mold, with husband Damian. She regularly participates in fundraising challenges and is a volunteer member of the Princes Trust Wales advisory council. She is also a member of the Open University’s Wales advisory board.
