An economist, celebrated author of economics books, a man who predicted the crisis of 2008, is back in parliament. Will he be the next leader of the Lib Dems?

Vince Cable is not everyone’s cup of tea, but there is one thing he has going for him that not many politicians can match.

Mr, or should we say Dr, Cable is a bona fide Economist. A graduate of Cambridge, before entering politics he was an economics advisor to the government of Kenya and later, Chief Economist at Shell.

He became known as Dr Death in the mid-noughties for his repeated warnings of surging debt and the danger of a financial crisis. When the Queen asked, ¬†post-2008 crash, “why didn’t anyone see it coming” he could have said: “Well Mam, I did.”

After the disaster that was the 2015 election for Lib Dems, Vince Cable lost his seat. In the vacuum left by Nick Clegg stepping down, with no Vince Cable eligible, Tim Farron jumped into the breach.  But the election of June 8th was not a good one for him.

Maybe then the way is open for Dr Cable.

He said this morning: “The hard UKIP-style Brexit Theresa May adopted is simply no longer viable. They’re going have to accommodate the 48 per cent.”

He may also emerge as the voice of soft-Brexit.
