Recent extreme weather conditions across the UK have been a timely reminder for businesses that they must be fully prepared for the worst. Research shows a staggering 80% of businesses in the United Kingdom who experience a disaster without some form of continuity planning will go into liquidation within 18 months. This appears not to sway many SMEs who view insurance as a ‘grudge commodity purchase’. This is not the case as, if implemented correctly and coupled with risk management, it can be a strategic business tool. Following a period of falling rates, it has been predicted that we will see increases in insurance premiums in 2008, likely to have been accentuated by the recent floods. The need for SMEs, therefore, to use such a tool in this ‘hardening’ market is becoming increasingly important.
