A Silicon Valley entrepreneur died of a severe head trauma on Friday after falling at the gym, according to local authorities.

SurveyMonkey chief executive and husband to Facebook executive Sheryl Sandberg, Dave Goldberg, was found lying next to a treadmill at a gym at a Four Seasons resort in Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico.

The 47-year old reportedly left his room at 16:00 and was found next to the treadmill at around 18:30.

Authorities said it was apparent that he slipped on the treadmill and hit the machine with the lower back of his head.

Mr Goldberg still has vital signs when he was found, but later died in hospital. The Mexican authorities have no plans to launch a criminal investigation.

Facebook founder and chief executive, Mark Zuckerberg, said: “Dave Goldberg was an amazing person and I am glad I got to know him. My thoughts and prayers are with Sheryl and her family. I hope friends will join me in celebrating his life by sharing your memories of Dave on his profile, as his brother Rob suggests.”

Mr Goldberg joined SurveyMonkey in 2009. It is now worth $2 billion and is backed by Google Ventures.
