Video advertising service BrightRoll will become the latest company to be bought by Yahoo, the tech giant has revealed.

Yahoo said the $640m (£402m) acquisition will makes its video advertising platform "the largest in the US".

BrightRoll provides automated online video advertising for some of the world's biggest brands. Its revenues are expected to reach $100m this year.

"Here at Yahoo, video is one of the largest growth opportunities, and BrightRoll is a terrific, strategic and financially compelling fit for our video advertising business," said chief executive Marissa Mayer in a statement.

Yahoo has made a number of acquisitions recently in an attempt to turnaround its falling revenues and profits.

It has struggled to keep up with Google in terms of revenues from advertising. Whereas Yahoo saw revenue from ads drop 5% in the third quarter, Google's increased by 17%.
