The bidding process for the football World Cup in 2026 has been delayed by FIFA amid allegations of corruption in the awarding of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.

The location of the 2026 World Cup was due to be announced in Kuala Lumpur in May 2017.

Football's world governing body has been rocked by criminal investigations into corruption by US and Swiss authorities. US authorities are investigating allegations dating back to the early 1990s, while Swiss authorities are conducting criminal investigations into financial irregularities in the process for the World Cup in Russia in 2018, and in Qatar in 2022.

The allegations even resulted in the resignation of FIFA president Sepp Blatter, just days after he was re-elected, although there is not currently any direct investigation into Mr Blatter.
