US President Donald Trump has said the US should not block technology from other countries in order to be a world leader.
Although Trump did not mention Chinese mobile phone manufacturer Huawei, many have suggested it indicates a softer stance on the company.
US authorities have banned Huawei from its future 5G networks, and has been pressuring its allies to do the same. Trump said US tech companies need to "step up their efforts, or get left behind".
"I want the United States to win through competition, not by blocking out currently more advanced technologies," he added.
Earlier this week, the UK's National Cyber Security Centre recommended Huawei be allowed to bid on national telecoms contracts, describing security risks as "manageable".
Following the news, Huawei's founder Ren Zhengfei said the US could not 'crush' the business.
