After 10 days of UK-wide industrial action, Unilever have approached workplace mediation service, Acas to engage striking workers in talks over changes to the company’s pension.

The decision to strike arose from changes to the Anglo-Dutch consumer goods company’s pensions policy, which the Unite union claimed could see 40% knocked off the value of pensions.

After refusing to negotiate, the union allege, 10 days of strikes were called which saw company share values plunge as nervous investors anticipated a lengthy and costly dispute.

Commenting on Unilever’s decision to resume talks, the three unions issued a joint statement:

“We welcome the fact that Unilever has at last recognised its responsibility to talk to us about a possible resolution to the dispute. We hope the agreement to talk through Acas is a genuine indication of a willingness to engage meaningfully in an effort to find a solution.

“However, it is very early days and the dispute will continue until proposals have been put forward that are acceptable to our members.”
