Echoing calls from the Mayor and business leaders, the London Assembly Transport Committee has written to the Secretary of State for Transport to urge the Government to protect vital investment in the capital’s transport network.

Val Shawcross AM, Chair of the Transport Committee, said:

“Despite the pressure on the public purse both the upgrade of the London Underground and the construction of Crossrail must go ahead — in full, and on time.

“The Tube already carries more than a billion people a year — something of a miracle given the ageing infrastructure - but without the upgrade work it desperately needs the service will not keep pace with London’s growing population.

“Alongside the Tube upgrades, Crossrail represents the next vital step in ensuring London — the heart of the UK economy — has the transport capacity to remain competitive and prosperous.

“It is in the national interest to keep London moving and it would be a terrible mistake to jeopardise the future to make a few savings now.”
