Transparency is a trend that is engulfing all aspects of our life. In business, transparency helps to build trust and the same can be said for our personal lives. To see how the loss of transparency can erode trust we need only see how the rapidly unfolding situation with the News International is affecting their reputation.

In the past, it was very easy for us to maintain separate personas. We had out of work friends and we had our mates, and never the twain shall meet. But today, thanks to the rise of the social networks, our professional and social groups are becoming a lot more blurred. This makes it very difficult to continue to maintain different personas for each group. You try hard enough for long enough and you risk bordering on schizophrenia.

So, what’s the alternative? Well, be yourself! If you present a version of yourself that is you, then there’s no juggling act and no potential for you to be rumbled. By acting transparently and authentically, you’re being real. And someone who’s being real is a lot easier to connect with than someone who’s trying to impress or say the right thing.

However, the only flaw in this awesome plan is this: what if you’re not clear on who you are? Many people aren’t, so you’re not alone. Being unsure as to who we are means we might not be sure what we stand for, or what we’re aiming for. Or maybe we’re trying out different roles to see which one fits or gives us the most success. But you only really start to find success when you start leveraging your strengths and your passions. Uncovering who you are and reconnecting to yourself has the added benefit of boosting your confidence too.

So, start to find out! The minute you start behaving with integrity and authenticity, you build trust. And with trust comes a great reputation on which success is built.
