Toyota has regained its place as the world's largest car manufacturer in terms of sales in the wake of the emissions scandal.

After the first six months of the year, Volkswagen was ahead of the Japanese firm for the first time. But over the first nine months of the year, Toyota sold 7.5 million cars. Volkswagen sold 7.43 million, and third place General Motors was at 7.2 million.

However, Volkswagen's emissions scandal struck at the end of September, so is unlikely to have had much of an impact.

Despite regaining top spot, Toyota's sales were still down 1.5% on the same period last year. The Japanese has held pole position in every year since 2008, bar 2011 when the tsunami delayed production.
