Whether you want to remain or leave, whether you are Tory, Liberal or Socialist you can’t help but think that the campaigning from both sides of the EU argument is, at best, odious.

They say that when the US sneezes the UK catches a cold and it seems that we have caught something from across the Atlantic, the 'Trump Virus'.

Over the past months have we become so sanitised to his particular brand of bigotry, violent hate, anger and lies that when we see and hear Boris Johnson buffooning do we perhaps exonerate him sub-consciously as being ‘not as bad as Trump’?

It might be a good time to remind ourselves that the only reason we are having this referendum at all is because of long standing rifts in the Conservative Party.

In the run up to the 2015 General Election, David Cameron promised the eurosceptics in his party a referendum on Europe to try and stop them turning to UKIP, ideologically a place where many would feel more at home!

In that election the Conservative Party won 37% of the votes on a turnout of 66%, meaning that we have a government that around three quarters of the population didn’t vote for who have imposed a referendum because of their own internal disagreements.

But we are very much where we are and that doesn’t seem to be a very nice place, but surely it’s not too much to ask our politicians to at least treat us with some respect and not trade on innuendo and half truths but provide us with clear, independent analysis?

I was going to suggest an independent inquiry but as we’ve been waiting for Sir John Chilcot to deliver his findings on the Iraq War since June 2009, that clearly wouldn’t work, but what about a televised debate with lie detectors?

At least it might get everyone engaged.

Personally, I’m going to vote to remain in Europe, if for no other reason than I have no idea what a Brexit might look like – what I’d really like to be able to do is to vote for a leader who can be straight talking, inspirational and honest – anyone out there?
