Tesco has announced plans to sell-off more than a dozen development sites in a deal worth £250 million.

The supermarket giant had planned to build new locations on the development sites. But in January Tesco said it was scrapping plans to open 49 new stores, some of which were already built.

The sites will be sold to property investment firm Meyer Bergman, and it is thought that up to 10,000 new homes could be built on the sites in London, Bath and the South East.

Tesco chief financial officer Alan Stewart told BBC Radio 4 "we don't have the resource to put into these developments".

He added: "The right decision for us and the business is not to go ahead."
