Scottish & Southern Energy (SSE) have become the latest utilities company to increase their prices.

The gas and electricity supplier have announced that electricity bills will increase by an average of 11%, with household gas bills to go up by 18% as of September 14th.

Earlier this month British Gas announced they too would be increasing prices, citing an increase in wholesale energy prices for the increase.

The rise by SSE is not a total surprise, after the firm announced in May that it was likely their prices will have to go up.

It made that announcement as it reported that its annual pre-tax profits had increased by 29% to £2.1 billion.

Only last week a report from watchdog Consumer Focus highlighted that five million UK households are in 'fuel poverty'. And that figure is expected to rise to six and a half million as the top energy suppliers push their prices up.
