ZRZ Studios is a team of 3 university graduates, Salim Hasshu, Nasar Hasshu and Nizaam Majothi. We spoke with Salim about entrepreneurship and the how the gaming tech industry is changing.
Briefly tell us about your journey to entrepreneurship
As we have been developing for around 17 months, some of our titles have shown success and recognition. For example, Kite Trip (released in April 2016) got a feature on iOS and was a part of the best new games chart. Currently we are working on our new game ‘Inops’ which we have got amazing feedback from exhibiting at popular gaming events in the UK.
If you had one piece of advice for an entrepreneur just starting up, what would it be?
Try to attend as many events as possible that relate to your business. Let’s say you make games, then you should attend gaming events and exhibit. This will allow you to promote yourselves and your product whilst networking with people to build strong relations within the industry. You will gain valuable feedback on how to improve your product and shape your business model.
You will find plenty of companies that are looking to offer funding and publishing for your game at gaming events. A publisher can provide strong marketing tactics such as exposing your new game to the publishers existing user base, even by promoting within their own titles. Be aware that publishers will want a cut from the sales of your game so be prepared to negotiate a deal that suits you.
Exhibiting at these events will be expensive but you will find some opportunities to exhibit for free you dig deep enough. For example, popular gaming events such as ‘Insomnia’ and ‘Norwich Gaming Festival’ give Indie developers the opportunity to exhibit for free.
How do you think the gaming industry is changing?
There are more opportunities for indie developers now and I believe opportunities will continue to grow in the future. You can get your hands on a ‘Nintendo Switch’ dev kit or ‘Xbox One’ dev kit without much hassle, and they are affordable. But this means your promotion strategy is becoming more and more important due to the increase in competition.
What do you have planned for your business over the next 12 months?
We originally focused on game development for mobile devices but now we are extending that to include PC and console versions of a unique IP. We would also love to develop games for VR once we have expanded our business.
