As the London riots raged on for a third straight night the role of social media and technology has been called into question.
It has been widely reported that the use of Blackberry Messenger, Twitter, Facebook and other social mediums has played a large part in alerting people to where the so called 'hot-spots' were.
And now rumours are rife that Blackberry Messenger will be shut down to prevent further damage being done. We have seen tactics like this before, notably in Egypt where there was the turning off of phone networks and Internet access to stop protestors co-ordinating during the Arab Spring revolutions.
Right now it might only be a rumour but if the riots persist it may well become a reality as police look to real-time evidence to help them control what is becoming a major problem.
