Retail trade volumes increased by 0.9% across the Eurozone in May having bucked the trend of decline culminating in a 1% drop for April.
Denmark enjoyed the highest monthly surge in retail trade, jumping 4.3% compared, while Portugal saw the biggest annual slip of -4.0%; figures published today by Eurostat- the EU’s press office- have confirmed.
Food, drinks and tobacco fared well whilst food sales struggled to grow at the same rate, affected by spikes in the price of produce.
Figures published this morning by the British Retail Consortium confirmed that UK retail declined, though the shrinkage was thought to be a return to more accurate reflection of the economy following a strong April. An elongated, sunny weekend and the Royal Wedding were considered behind the surge.
