Research by TalkTalk has revealed that one in five of those surveyed prefer to contact friends and family via Facebook as opposed to using the phone.
Whilst phones still lead the way, those who said they prefer to use Facebook said they did so on a regular basis.
Perhaps more surprising was that employees using smartphones contacted work colleagues with texts, emails and Facebook more often than friends or family members.
Elsewhere the study revealed that forty per cent use their mobile phones to make calls, rather than a landline, even when one is available.
"In an age where the rise of social media as a way for people to contact each other is frequently discussed, it’s good to see that verbal communication is still important," Mark Schmid a spokesperson for TalkTalk said.
"In fact, as our research shows, calling from a mobile remains the main way for them to stay in touch with loved ones."
