JD Sports says it has received a boost in sales in recent weeks, thanks to the start of Euro 2016.

The sports and fashion retailer's executive chairman, Peter Cowgill, said: "We have, in recent weeks, seen a further boost to sales from the UEFA Euro 2016 tournament. Consequently, we are well positioned to deliver an excellent first half-year result."

JD sports has an exclusive deal with to sell the Welsh and Northern Irish teams' official kits. And with Wales qualifying for its first major tournament in 50 years, it has seen a particularly strong rise in sales of Wales shirts.

Over the past year, the company's share price has grown by 86% and is now more valuable that Sports Direct.

"We face strong comparatives for the remainder of the year but our strong start will help facilitate delivery of current market expectations," Mr Cowgill added.
