The growth of online grocery shopping is showing signs of slowing down in the UK, according to a new study.

Retail analysts Mintel found that 45% of consumers said they had done a grocery shop online in 2018, down from 49% in 2016. The survey of 2,000 consumers also found that 63% of those had done a food shop online had experienced an issue with an order in the past year.

Additionally, 42% of older consumers said they have never shopped in that way and have no intention of doing so.

Online grocery sales reached £12.3 billion last year, equivalent to 7% of the whole market. Mintel said the market share was forecast to hit 10% by 2023, with sales rising to £19.8bn.

Those that do not shop online said choosing fresh products themselves was a key factor, while 24% said delivery charges were too high and 18% do not like minimum spending requirements.
