As well as the support of a whole nation, Wales go into the biggest match in its history on Wednesday with £30 million worth of bets backing them, according to William Hill.

Wales are slight outsiders in their Euro 2016 semi-final clash against Portgual on Wednesday, but they have been outsiders for most of the tournament.

Before qualifying started in 2014, Wales were 250/1 to win the tournament while they are now just 8/1. William Hill said it would suffer a £20m payout if Wales defied the odds and won the whole thing.

William Hill's Joe Crilly said: “After England were knocked out, Wales immediately became our worst result in the outright market.

“Punters have been piling in all week and they are banking on Bale and co to boost their coffers. We’ve rung round our shops in Cardiff and the Welsh wagers outnumber the Portuguese punts by 50 to 1.”

Wales are 6/4 to reach the final and 3/1 to do so in 90 minutes, but the bookies will be hoping for another draw in what has been a positive tournament to date for layers.
