A drop in emigration has seen the highest quarterly net migration to the UK, the Office for National Statistics has shown.
Emigration dropped to its lowest level in a decade, at 339,000, whilst immigration remained steady at 591,000.
Migrants coming to the UK to study dropped 7000 from their 2010 peak to reach 231,000.
Global economic uncertainty is likely the chief reason that UK residents leaving the UK to work have dropped to their lowest point for 5 years, with 174,000 leaving the UK for work-related reasons in Q3 2011, compared to 203,000 in Q1 2010.
