Youth workers in Prime Minister David Cameron’s home constituency appear set to be the latest public sector workers to strike, after a ballot was called by the Unite union for Monday 18th.
The union’s members are furious that the Conservative-led council's plans to dismantle its youth support service will cause the closure of 26 youth centres and two detached youth work teams.
The jobs of around 80 youth workers, who care for hundreds of vulnerable kids across the county, are now at risk as the council pushes ahead with its damaging re-structuring exercise.
“The council’s actions are a smack in the face to the youth work profession in Oxfordshire and the young people they support,” said unite’s Mary Sayer.
“The fact that this is happening on David Cameron’s patch is appalling. Young people from across Oxfordshire have campaigned rigorously against the loss of their youth service, but their efforts have fallen on deaf ears.”
