British Gas has announced that they will phase out the 'outdated' method of doorstep selling over the coming three months.

They follow the lead of Scottish and Southern Energy after the selling style came under fire from a group of influential MPs.

Fears that workers would be laid off have been appeased by British Gas who say the 400 agents they employ in such roles will be kept on in advisory roles.

British Gas themselves admitted that the door-to-door sales was an outdated means for energy companies to source new customers.

"Doorstep selling, in its current form, is no longer a sustainable way to engage or build a relationship with customers," said Ian Peters of British Gas.

"We want the energy advice we give our customers to be trusted and delivered at a time and place that is convenient to them."
