Leadership is, by definition, the act of leading a group of people or organisation. This can be done in many ways, which is why no two leaders are ever the same, each has their own style.
In rugby the leaders often lead by example - you don't always need to be ranting and raving to lead and inspire - sometimes it's as simple as taking the opposition on with ball in hand, providing a focal point for your teammates.
This week the British & Irish Lions team selection this has caused a serious rift in the rugby world, and it centres (no pun intended) around one player and his wealth of leadership skills. Brian O'Driscoll has never been dropped from an international team before, and many expected him to lead the Lions in what would have been his last hurrah in red.
However, Warren Gatland isn't concerned with any of that. All he is concerned with is current form and winning a test series. If that means dropping the legendary BOD, then so be it. At the top end of professional sport tough decisions are made. Win at all costs means exactly that.
What has irked many is not that BOD has been dropped, as he hasn't been at his mercurial best in this series, but the fact his exclusion leaves the Lions with a serious lack of experience and leadership - after all Paul O'Connell and Sam Warburton are already out injured.
