Santander executive chairman Ana Botin launched a major reshuffle of the bank's board after two months in charge.
Ms Botin took over the role in September after the death of her father, Emilio.
She removed Javier Marin as chief executive, replacing him with Jose Antonio Alvarez, who had been chief financial officer for more than 10 years.
Ms Botin appointed Jose Garcia Cantera as CFO and introduced three new independent members to the board.
Ms Botin said that Mr Marin had "led the commercial transformation of our bank, bringing innovative management to lead our customer segmentation and service improvement initiatives, while also improving our profitability and efficiency".
The three new board members mean that the board is split between 15 men and 5 women.
