Amazon has launched its marketplace for arts and crafts in Europe, featuring thousands of handcrafted products sold by artisans, giving small businesses the opportunity to sell nationwide.

‘Handmade by Amazon’ will stock over 30,000 “genuinely handmade items crafted and sold directly from European artisians”.

The e-commerce giant will provide various services to help artisans grow their businesses, including support to set up the shop and manage the business.

Francois Saugier, vice president for Amazon Seller Services in Europe said: “We have designed a shopping experience for customers looking for unique, handmade items by bringing together many of the best artisans.

“With Handmade at Amazon, artisans can grow their business, and many of them will now be able to turn their passion into a career.”

Customers across Amazon’s five European websites will now be able to shop by country to find products from artisans in more than 40 countries.

The store offers custom orders and has built new tools to allow artisans to share what can be customised directly on the detail page. Customers can specify the options they want, including personalisation such as names and dates during the ordering process.

Lu West, artist and printmaker, said: “One of the biggest challenges facing artists is the ability to sell your work to a big audience. Handmade at Amazon will provide that crucial link between a large customer audience and the artisan's studio.”

Handmade first launched in the US last year and stocks around 500,000 items. However this figure stands largely behind close competitor Esty, who stocks 40 million items for sale, with 1.7 million sellers and over 26 million buyers.

Nic and Andy Bouchard, MooBoo Home, said that the launch of the store in Europe is a “huge opportunity”. They added: said: “Until now we’ve only sold locally, but our designs will now be seen nationwide.

“We hope that this opportunity will mean the move from part time hobby to full time business, and we can’t wait to get started.”
