Newcastle United’s sponsorship deal with Wonga has been controversial and attracted a lot of media attention over the past three years.

But with the team battling for survival on the final day of the Premier League season, the relationship has hit the headlines again, although for more embarrassing reasons this time.

The North East club unveiled its new kit with Wonga’s old logo emblazoned across the midriff.

The controversial short-term lender yesterday (Tuesday) launched its rebrand, including a new logo.

Newcastle and Wonga said pre-orders of the new shirts will carry Wonga’s old logo.

Launching the new kit, Newcastle said: “The Magpies will be trying to earn their stripes against the Hammers at St. James’ Park and the design is centred on the iconic club colours. But there is also a hint of blue, matching the scroll under the famous Newcastle United crest.”

Wonga re-branded to serve “hard-working people throughout the UK who need access to transparent, flexible and short-term credit products”.
