Tablets, smartphones and eReaders have witnessed a surge in popularity this year, particularly among women and older consumers, research has found.

Towards the end of 2010 the majority of users of such connected devices were male. But market research firm, Nielsen, report that eReader users are now 61% female, with equal numbers of male and female smartphone users. Just tablets remain more popular among males.

The average age of gadget users is also increasing, with 62% of users being 35 or under at the end of 2010, compared to just 46% today. This growth is most pronounced for eReaders and Tablets, whilst for smartphones use remains more youth dominated.
