The FTSE 100 recovered in early trading on Tuesday, having fallen back on Monday, and seen drops of almost 6% over the past week.
However, traders said concerns over debt problems in Europe and United States would make any upside short-lived.
The FTSE 100 gained 40.49 points, up 0.8% earlier this (Tuesday) morning, with the .FTNMX1770 up as much as 1.7%.
