Gateshead-based steel roll manufacturers The Davy Roll Company have won the North East Region leg of the annual International Trade Awards 2008.
Davy Roll Managing Director Steve Bell and Commercial Manager Carl Patterson collected the award at an announcement function held on 11 April at the Malmaison Hotel in Newcastle upon Tyne.
Davy Roll universally impressed judges and sponsors alike with their import and export acumen, unparalleled customer support and robust acquisition strategy. These have helped stave off stiff competition and secured enough orders to comfortably maintain the business at full capacity until 2009.
Davy Roll were presented with their certificate by HSBC’s Commercial Director for the North, Allan Wilkinson, and Martin Rogers, International Business Manager and Ian Campbell OBE, Consultant Editor of International Trade Today.
Mr Wilkinson acknowledged the significant success of a manufacturer on Tyneside as a key strength of Davy Roll’s entry. ‘As the world’s local bank, HSBC’s heritage is synonymous with international trade, so it was a pleasure to see a manufacturer with nearly 40 years of trading on Tyneside overcoming significant competitive challenges to thrive in a 21st century environment. The UK is no longer automatically seen as the global manufacturing powerhouse it once was, yet Davy Roll is clearly bucking that trend.’
Steve Bell added: ‘we’ve battled through some seriously testing times and we’re delighted with this accolade – but we won’t be taking it for granted that we’ve more customers than we can cope with. It’s a great position to be in but we’re mindful that we need to keep exceeding expectations to keep the good times rolling’.
Ian Campbell said: ‘The judges were impressed with Davy Roll’s resilience and approach to changing circumstances. Many have written off the UK’s historic “metal-bashing” industries. But here is a business which is nearly 180 years old, which still operates in one of the UK’s great traditional manufacturing areas and in an absolutely classic industry sector. It has responded to a disappearing domestic market by finding niches in overseas markets and exploiting them successfully. Operating in both sophisticated European markets and dynamic growth areas such as China, India and Mexico, Davy Roll is making profits and rapidly growing its order book. They are most deserving winners of the North East award.’
