The founders of sports nutrition brand, Grenade, were crowned ‘Great British Entrepreneur of the Year’ for 2018 at the National Winners’ Evening of the NatWest Great British Entrepreneur Awards in London tonight (24th January).

The husband and wife duo of Alan and Juliet Barratt started the company with just £27 in 2010 and sold it for £72 million seven years later. They join the likes of Hannah & Sophie Pycroft of Spectrum Collections, Julie Deane OBE of Cambridge Satchel Co., James Watt of BrewDog and Shaun Pulfrey of Tangle Teezer in winning the overall award.

The latest award builds on their regional success at the Great British Entrepreneur Awards gala final for the Midlands in November, where Alan and Juliet won both the Scale-Up and overall categories.

Speaking after the National Winners’ Final, Juliet said: “Awards like this are so special and humbling. They remind you that all the endless hours of work, sleepless nights, compromises, challenges, highs and lows have all been worth it.

“Also, an extra special thank you to those staff who joined the brand at the start. Some left ‘respectable’ jobs in well-established businesses, some straight out of University to work with a small business with only a few years of trading history. The offices were cold and a bit grubby, everyone got stuck in with cleaning, wrapping pallets, packing orders etc. Thank you.”

Founder of the NatWest Great British Entrepreneur Awards, Francesca James, said: “Alan and Juliet join a fantastic group of entrepreneurs who have been named Great British Entrepreneur of the Year, and they’re thoroughly deserving of the title. They are truly amazing entrepreneurs and have that added unique bond of going through this journey as husband and wife.

“What they have achieved so far is nothing short of remarkable, and I can’t wait to see what Grenade does next.”

The National Winners’ Evening ended the 2018 Awards programme with 12 category winners crowned from the pool of regional winners.

Alison Rose, deputy CEO of NatWest Holdings and CEO of NatWest Commercial & Private Banking, said: “NatWest is proud to support the Great British Entrepreneur Awards, celebrating another year of amazing achievements for entrepreneurs and start-ups from every corner of the country. Supporting entrepreneurs is a key priority for NatWest and our dedicated programme of free mentoring, insight and bespoke coaching, is specifically designed to meet the needs of entrepreneurs who want to grow and scale their business. Congratulations to everyone who has made it to tonight’s National Winners Evening.”
