The UK’s major broadband providers have agreed to remove monthly data caps for the duration of the Coronavirus pandemic.

It is part of a range of measures agreed by the industry and government to ensure consumers are supported during this time.

With much of the country now working from home, data caps could prevent workers from completing tasks or charge them for further internet access. The agreement will also see broadband providers “fairly and appropriately” support customers who aren’t able to pay their bills as a result of losing their jobs or income.

Many broadband packages are advertised as “unlimited” but include hidden caps known as “fair usage policies”. Under the agreement, “unlimited” packages will now truly mean unlimited. However, some of the measures are very light on detail.

Data caps on mobile phone contracts will remain in place.

Digital Secretary Oliver Dowden said it was “fantastic” to see broadband companies “pulling together to do their bit for the national effort”.
