In the first of our career mythbusting series, we speak to Ritchie Mehta, founder of the School of Marketing to help those of you looking to kickstart your career in marketing but don’t know where to start.

Back in 2018, Ritchie stumbled upon a startling statistic. In a Marketing Week survey of over 10,000 young people, only 3% considered a career in marketing.

It seemed to him that the marketing industry itself had a marketing problem. Five months later, the School of Marketing was born. The pandemic hasn’t made it easier on young people. Almost two-thirds of people who lost jobs in UK pandemic are under 25, and according to a report from the National Youth Agency and Youth Employment UK, it would take 1,000 new jobs and training places a day to get back to pre-pandemic levels by October 2021. Estimates suggest that the number of young people not in employment, education or training is set to rise by 50% as a result.

HMRC reported that it’s this same age group of employees that are more likely to be furloughed and lose their jobs, with the youth unemployment rate rising to 13.1%, compared with 4.1% for the whole of the UK.

If you’re in this age group and are trying to figure out your career options, Ritchie answers:

  • What is marketing?
  • What are the career options for you, with or without a degree?
  • What skills can you learn?
  • What are the future opportunities?

Speaking exclusively to Fresh Business Thinking, he explains everything you need to know about starting a career in marketing. He explores Gen Z and Millennial digital familiarity and how that translates into the role, the versatility of the career, and the legacy you can leave behind. Check out the video above for more.
