A surge in orders have seen Samsung overtake Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) as the world’s biggest smartphone manufacturer, Strategy Analytics have confirmed.

The US-based tech market research firm showed Samsung shipments jumped 44%, edging past the South Korean firm’s bitter US rival.

Today’s news is the latest in a series of accolades for Samsung, who recently won several awards at the T3 Gadget awards for their slick Galaxy SII.

The rivalry between the two firms has seen a series of patent infringement lawsuits levelled, with Samsung the latest to attempt to block sales of Apple’s high spec iPhone 4S, following Apple’s successful bid to block Galaxy tab sales in the EU following equally frivolous patent suits.
