Although the company was officially incorporated on 4th September 1998 the almost eponymous search engine has declared today its 14th birthday — and who can argue with the Google doodle.
What a 14 years! Google is now estimated to process over one billion search requests every day and generate nearly 40 billion dollars a year.
Founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin met at Stanford University and built a search engine that was firstly called BackRub because it used links to determine the importance of websites.
It was then christened Google, a play on the word ‘googol’ which in mathematics means 1 followed by a hundred zeros.
