This one is particularly relevant for entrepreneurs, but not limited to. No matter what type of business you decide to set up or lead, there will be an element of overlap with your personal brand. This little smidge of overlap will be the very bit of you that makes you YOU; your style, your values, your approach and your philosophy.

When you get this right, your business will miraculously adopt some lovely human qualities and you can breathe personality into your business brand. It’s this personality that will capture people’s hearts and make them want to buy time and time again. Just think of some of the big entrepreneurs of our time. Steve Jobs’ obsession with clean lines, design and simplicity is the very essence of Apple. Richard Branson’s sense of humour and maverick streak is what Virgin is all about.

So, over to you… Do you know which bits of you need to be extracted and extrapolated into your business? Well, let me give you a clue — the best place to start is to uncover your values. Your values determine how you choose to engage with the world, and for a business, it’s the same. The business values will dictate HOW it goes about doing business. The values may even inform its offering and can the be the source of innovation. But, the aspect where business values REALLY matter is people. And when it comes to building great companies, it’s clear to us all that the best way to do that is through your people. After all, people do business with people.

When your people share your values, then your staff and you will be beautifully aligned, it will make it so much easier for them to buy into your vision. When you’re all pointing in the same direction, you might as well have the force of nature behind you. A bold statement maybe, but bear with me. A group of people with shared values are more likely to get on naturally, so you have less team friction. Clarity on personal and business values can help with recruitment to ensure that you hire more of the same in terms of outlook and approach. Ultimately, if you want your business to grow, you need to be OK with the fact that your role is limited and finite. At some point you will step back from the front line and probably exit so there needs to be a small part of you that remains.

Just as the story of why you set up the business will be passed down to new staff, so will your values and your philosophy; probably the best way to leave your mark on the world.
