Volkswagen saw its sales in the UK have fallen by 20% in the wake of the emissions scandal, according to industry figures.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers & Traders (SMMT) said 12,958 new Volkswagen vehicles were registered in November, down from 16,196 in the same month last year. In October, Volkswagen reported a 10% fall in sales compared with the previous year.

Other brands owned by the German manufacturer caught up in the emissions scandal also saw their sales drop considerably. Seat saw its sales fall by almost quarter (24%), Skoda by 11% and Audi 4%. Bentley was the only of VW's car brands to see sales increase, up from 73 to 88.

In September, Volkswagen was found to have cheated emissions tests in the US using a so-called 'defeat device' on an estimated 11 million cars. Analysts expect the scandal to cost Volkswagen around $20 billion.

Overall, new car sales grew 3.8% in November compared to last year. In October, new car sales in the UK fell for the first time in more than three years.
