Thomas Gilbert Sr, the founder of a $200m (£130m) hedge fund, has been shot dead in his New York flat.
US media have said that Mr Gilbert had been involved in a domestic dispute.
No arrests have been made, but police have said they want to speak to Mr Gilbert's son, who is believed to have been the last person to see him alive.
Media reports said the body was found at 15:30 local time in a bedroom in Mr Gilbert's Manhattan flat on Beekman Place, and that a gun had been recovered at the scene.
The 70-year old was founder and president of Wainscott Capital Partners, after starting the fund in 2011.
"Right now, we're looking to speak to his son, who was the last person to see him alive," police spokesman Lt John Grimpel said.
