Tesco (LSE: TSCO) are committing to a 30% surge in their apprenticeship training programme that will boost its numbers to 3,000 over 2011/2.

The announcement comes at a time when employers frequently bemoan the lack of skills in today’s jobseekers, with business organisations including the Confederation of British Industry deeming the UK’s skills shortage the single biggest barrier to a manufacturing recovery.

“At a time when the prospect of unemployment is a genuine concern across the country, we are working hard to create employment and training opportunities,” Judith Nelson, Tesco's UK Personnel Director.

“This year, we will be welcoming our largest ever intake of new graduates and we are equally committed to developing the careers of our existing staff through our Apprenticeship scheme. Whether you join us straight from school with no formal qualifications or have graduated from university with a first class degree, there is an opportunity to build your career with Tesco."
