Uber has has announced plans to invest $1 billion (£640m) to expand its India business.

The taxi-booking service said it wants to expand the number of cities it operates in and plans to invest in new products and payments options.

In June, Uber announced similar investing plans for China.

But the controversial service was banned in India earlier this year after one of its drivers was accused of rape. But weeks later, Uber was operating again after it said it introduced better screening of drivers and an in-app emergency button for passengers.

Uber has been banned in various cities around the world following allegations of sexual harassment by drivers.
