When it comes to building a personal brand, one of the most important areas where your mindset can affect your brand and your reputation, is confidence and self-belief.

When discovering, developing and building personal brands, one area that most of my clients want help with is this. If we've identified strategies and tactics that they can implement to build their reputation, the number one barrier that seems to present itself is "I'm not sure I'm good enough to do that" or "I could never do that".

This is especially the case if they've identified networking and public speaking as areas that would help them to broaden their reach and increase their network.

Did you know that public speaking is the number one fear affecting people in the UK today? This is staggering considering that it carries no potential threat to human life or any other such danger, unless you count falling off stage as a reason to be scared.

This popular fear is probably down to our early school experiences when we had to stand up and read out loud, often being mocked by other classmates, or even the teacher. And yet, this "educational experience" is now proving to be a significant Achilles heel in our ability to progress on our chosen path.

Not believing that we're good enough is probably one of the most destructive limiting beliefs that we hold. We use it as an excuse to not put ourselves forward so we live in our comfort zones because we don't feel that we have what it takes to step outside. Those of you that habitually step outside of your comfort zone will be only too happy to agree with me when I say this: the more that you breach the limits of your comfort zone, the more you push yourself and hence the more you build your confidence.

But for this process to start you first need to have the courage to step forth. And destructive limiting beliefs have a nasty habit of stepping forth instead, thus keeping us where we are. This reminds me of a great saying: “A ship in harbour is safe - but that is not what ships are built for”. How true. You are not mean to stay in harbour either.

Of course, the not-good-enough belief is only one of many, but it is by far the most popular and destructive, particularly when it comes to building a strong personal brand and a reputation to be proud of.

As with the other types of head trash that I’ve mentioned in these articles, limiting beliefs don’t have to be a permanent feature of your life. They can be changed to support your happiness and wellbeing, so if you think that you’re limiting beliefs are holding you back, then clear them out so that you can be more awesome than you already are.
