The Accelerator Academy, a new training, mentoring and investment programme for innovative start-ups and early stage, high growth businesses in the Tech, Media/ Marketing and Telecoms/Mobile (TMT) space, launches today (Wednesday) in London.

Focused on ambitious entrepreneurs pre-launch or within their first year of business, this executive training program helps businesses achieve sustainable growth and attract seed investment support.

Adapted from several models successfully developed internationally, The Accelerator Academy will focus on commercial and corporate development support for the UK’s leading new entrepreneurs, and through a 12 week part time syllabus will help entrepreneurs with idea / product / service development, proof of concept, management structure, company formation, capitalisation, go to market strategies, investor readiness and other troubleshooting.

The Accelerator Academy utilises solid experienced mentors to deliver the 12 week syllabus. Every Academy Mentor has successfully exited at least one TMT business. Mentors have the right to “buy in” to the businesses that are developed.

With the Academy’s ambitious emerging entrepreneurs learning from proven, exited entrepreneurs with past experience of successful exits, supported by expert guest speakers, the Academy helps to improve the start-up survival rate, accelerate growth and help emerging entrepreneurs avoid common early stage hazards, also providing access to hard-to-find seed capital.

The Accelerator Academy plans to help launch / develop up to 100 high quality TMT companies per year.

Welcoming the Accelerator Academy to London: Mayor of London Boris Johnson said:

“The Accelerator Academy represents exactly the type of investment in London's future businesses that will secure our position as Europe's digital capital. Using the nous of seasoned entrepreneurs to mentor those in the very early stages, alongside much needed access to investment, the Academy will give tech entrepreneurs a real leg up in a tough economic climate, helping to create London's future jobs."

Accompanying The Accelerator Academy will be access to seed capital, through the Accelerator Fund and an investment syndicate.

Ian Merricks, founder of The Accelerator Academy and Managing Partner at TMT investment advisors White Horse Capital explained their involvement in the programme:

“We see 500 businesses a year looking for investment. It’s a competitive process, and frankly most are not of sufficient quality to be successful. Added to that the high failure rate of start-ups and we recognised a need to support the very early stage entrepreneurs and start-ups, with training and finance.

The Accelerator Academy was created to educate emerging entrepreneurs, with training around growth issues for start-ups, delivered by successful entrepreneurs as mentors, and supported by access to appropriate seed capital or “smart money”. Through sponsors subsidising the Academy, talented and ambitious entrepreneurs can access this support for less than £60 per week.

Working with a very wide network of partners and supporters, we expect the Academy to become a well known developer of high growth businesses and a fervent hunting ground for high growth investors”.

Sponsoring the launch of the Academy are NatWest and haysmacintyre Accountants.

"We are always looking for ways to support businesses as they look to grow and thrive and through NatWest's sponsorship of the Accelerator Academy it's another great way to do just that," commented Ian Mason, NatWest Relationship Director for Technology and Media in London. "Through this sponsorship we can engage with high growth tech and media companies at an early stage in their development."

Ian Cliffe, partner, haysmacintyre added:

“haysmacintyre is proud to be supporting the Accelerator Academy. It is great to be part of an initiative where experienced mentors and respected professionals will be working with next generation entrepreneurs to help new TMT businesses develop and grow into viable and sustainable companies”
