Tesco reported its strongest sales performance for 18 months at the start of 2015, according to supermarket researcher Kantar Worldpanel.

Tesco's sales were up 1.1% in the three months to the start of March.

The UK's biggest supermarket saw its sales improve while its rivals all struggled. Asda's sales were down 2.1%, with Sainsbury's and Morrisons falling 0.5% and 0.4% respectively.

The figures will come as a huge boost to Tesco which has endured a torrid time with falling sales, market share and share price over the past year.

The rise in popularity of German budget supermarkets Aldi and Lidl created shockwaves in the supermarket industry towards the end of 2013 and throughout 2014, prompting a price war between the 'big four'.
