A multiplatform tax app for self-employed workers that calculates a live tax bill in real-time is representing Wales in the semi-finals of a start-up competition run by Virgin Media Business.

TAXO’D is one of 11 semi-finalists hoping to win the opportunity to pitch to Sir Richard Branson through Virgin Media Business' #Voom: Pitch to Rich competition.

As well as calculating real-time tax bills, TAXO'D also automatically files the user’s annual tax return from within the app without having to use the HMRC website.

#Voom: Pitch to Rich 2015 is a nationwide competition run by Virgin Media Business to discover the country’s most exciting and innovative businesses. Virgin Media Business is offering a £1 million business accelerator prize fund to support three winning businesses from three different categories — whether it’s just an idea, a promising startup or a company with huge growth potential.

From an initial 2,408 entries, TAXO’D made it through the initial round of public voting and into the final 32 pitches - and the final 11 in the startup - after impressing a panel of 'Pitch to Rich' judges.

TAXO’D’s founder Dave Legion, designer and animator from Haverfordwest, South
West Wales, said: “It took me four years to convince myself I was the right person to do this. As I’m not an accountant, I am a freelance designer — I could build a simple solution to manage the headache of freelance tax from the enduser perspective. I know first hand the headaches caused by tax and trying to make sense of
the HMRC website. TAXO’D aims to solve that.”

The app is to launch on iOS in the coming months and there are also plans for Android.
