Former Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer has left the tech giant after purchasing the NBA basketball team LA Clippers.
Ballmer was chief executive of Microsoft for 14 years, and worked with the company for three decades. But he believes it would be "impractical to continue" following his purchase of the Clippers.
"I see a combination of the Clippers, civic contribution, teaching and study taking a lot of my time," he wrote in a public letter.
He leaves the company with immediate effect due to the new NBA season and the start of a class he's teaching in what he described as a "hectic" autumn.
Ballmer still holds more Microsoft shares than anyone else, and insisted that he intends to hold onto them for the "foreseeable future".
"I bleed Microsoft - have for 34 years and I always will," he wrote.
