Starbucks says a strong Christmas period helped it to post better-than-expected figures for the three months to 27 December.

The coffee giant's net revenue for the period was $5.37bn (£3.77bn), up fom $4.8bn in the same period last year. Starbucks said sales over the Christmas holidays were up 9% on last year.

Sales at stores open for 13 months or more - or like-for-like sales - were up 8% in the quarter.

Starbucks chairman Howard Schultz said the results showed the "strength and relevance of the Starbucks brand around the world", with one in six Americans receiving a Starbucks card over Christmas.
