A dramatic upturn in demand for HGV drivers has prompted a specialist recruitment firm to speculate that the economic recovery is accelerating.
Driving Force, a division of gap personnel, has experienced a sudden spike in appetite for experienced HGV drivers in the past fortnight.
John Sutcliffe, UK operations manager at Driving Force, said the growth in demand has gone above and beyond the seasonal increase normally seen at this time of year.
“The haulage and logistics sector is notoriously cyclical, and we’d normally expect business to pick up at this time of year," he said.
“What we’re witnessing this year, however, is on another level. Demand from our clients is up around 30 per cent on the same period last year.
“Because they serve a range of sectors including retail and manufacturing, levels of activity amongst logistics firms are often seen as a barometer for the state of the economy in general.
“Our indicators, while only providing a mere snapshot, are therefore pointing to an overall improvement in economic conditions.”
