Sony Ericsson, on announcing their third quarter profits, have declared that they will focus solely on smartphones as of 2012.

The mobile manufacturers broke even in the third quarter, which is an improvement on the previous quarter's net income loss of €50m.

The 9.5 million handsets that were shipped saw a 9% fall year-on-year, and was partly behind the decision to shift their focus to smartphones and drop their lower-demand models.

"We will continue to invest in the smartphone market, shifting the entire portfoilio to smartphones during 2012," said President and Chief Executive, Bert Nordberg.
