Manchester United have confirmed that their manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, is to retire at the end of the season. Having managed the club since 1986 Sir Alex has decided the time is right to step down.

Already questions are being asked about his replacement, but one thing is for certain, whoever takes over will have a huge job living up to Sir Alex. His leadership skills, albeit ruthless at times, guided the club through one of the most successful periods ever seen in football.

With Jose Mourinho reportedly on his way out at Real Madrid, and David Moyes long touted as Fergie's successor, United are not short of options. However, it is Sir Alex's leadership that will surely be missed the most as the club moves into a new era.
